An Aha on the ADHD Aha

When it comes to attention (especially for those with ADHD), you need to understand a few things:
  1. What is obvious depends on what you attend to.
  2. If the obvious solution isn’t working, chances are you’re attending to the wrong thing.

Here is the Aha!  The self-regulation challenges of ADHD make it hard to get help with self-regulation. Have you noticed that it is obvious to corporate America that you ATTEND to what they WANT and thus that is what is delivered?  If what you ATTEND to isn’t working, then corporate America sells it to you again (“Just do it,” “Try harder,” “If at first you don’t’ succeed… try, try again”) and again as many times as you’ll buy what isn’t working!

What you want is an effort-free solution, a magic pill.

Here’s the trick!  The secret, the Ahas of all ADHD Ahas! If the obvious solutions are not working, chances are you are attending to the wrong thing. Maybe you should resist, override your urge to pursue methodical steps or proven solutions to be given to you and seek the ADHD Ahas you need to bully your ADHD into submission, to override it and be able to self-regulate!

Here’s an attention exercise.  Google the terms ”procrastination tips,” “how to stop procrastination,” or “practical tips to stop procrastinating.” Notice the suggestions and make a list of your top five favorites.
