Working Memory: Your GPSAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder negatively impacts executive functioning, and we often talk about its negative effect on self-regulation.

To address how executive functioning impacts working memory, we asked ADHD genius, Dr. Russell Barkley, to talk about his concept of working memory and why he uses the term “GPS” as a metaphor to change your life.

Dr. Barkley’s GPS metaphor is a perfect analogy of what the brain is doing when we use working memory. The GPS requires you to put in where you want to go, and then it starts bringing up what’s relevant. That is, it gives you visual imagery such as maps, geography, and roads to get you there. The GPS uses visual imagery just like the brain does.

The GPS also talks to you, giving you directions, and this is exactly the same thing your mind does. You’re using self-speech, your mind’s voice, to enhance the images, to give you directions, to tell you the rules.
